Access to Science

It takes a broad community to build safe and ethical AI. That’s why we’re committed to supporting the wider research community and enabling individuals - regardless of background - to achieve their full potential in science and technology.

We work with a number of different partners to strengthen the academic ecosystem, to support organisations working to broaden access to science in their own communities, and to help individuals take their own paths into science through our internship and scholarship programmes.

Investing in future leaders

Our DeepMind scholarship programme is designed to give talented students from underrepresented backgrounds a chance to study at a leading university and to connect with some of the brightest minds at DeepMind. Scholars get their Masters studies paid in full, opportunities to attend events and major conferences, as well as guidance and support from personal DeepMind mentors.

DeepMind scholarships are currently available for students at UCL, Cambridge, Oxford and NYU and are administered by the universities directly. Explore the specific requirements for each using the links below:

Collaborating with universities

A healthy academic community is critical to the safe and ethical development of AI. Many on our team hold university professorships, teaching and supervising students at Cambridge, Oxford, MIT, Imperial and elsewhere. Find out more about our courses here, or access videos of several courses on our YouTube channel

We also partner with some of the world's leading academic institutions to extend research and teaching capacity by establishing academic chairs in machine learning, where they are granted full academic freedom to pursue research in the field. Read more about our academic chairs at the University of Alberta, University College London and the University of Cambridge.

Inspiring the next generation

Our enthusiasm for science and AI makes us who we are. We understand that enthusiasm requires nurturing and support in order to thrive. That’s why we partner with charities like In2Science and Chess in Schools and Communities, and are founding partners to the African Deep Learning Indaba, Transylvanian Machine Learning Summer School and Canadian AI for Social Good Summer school. Our internship programmes offer an opportunity to gain experience in industry and lay the foundation for a successful career.

Supporting inclusive communities

We firmly believe that everyone should feel able to participate in AI and we are committed to supporting organisations that create community and advance diversity within the sector.  For example, we are proud partners to the Anita Borg Foundation, Women in Machine Learning, Black in AI and more. Many of our team dedicate their time and expertise to advancing discussions about AI in their communities.
