We are looking for an experienced, independent, and well organized Program Manager to partner with and help lead DeepMind Google Research, building collaborations across geographies to help organise and enable our people to be the best at what they do.
PGMs at DeepMind are visible leaders for their teams, and are expected to build strong trusting relationships with the team. Our PGMs develop a deep understanding of the people on their team, and coach them to continually grow and unlock their full potential. PGMs are guardians of our culture, and they encourage everyone to respect and care for our teammates and ourselves.
PGMs are expected to bring clarity to ambiguity, and provide stability through times of change. The PGM will use leadership and coaching skills to support and enable people and teams to produce world class pioneering work. The PGM will build an inclusive team environment to cultivate ideas, share knowledge, and embrace curiosity. The PGM will also facilitate conversations where individuals can be constructively challenged, facilitate opportunities for collaboration, create relevant connections across teams, and facilitate brainstorming and idea sharing. The PGM plays a key role in helping to bridge DeepMind’s research and applied efforts, and enhances our team’s ability to apply cutting edge ML technology to some of the biggest product challenges at Google.
The PGM is expected to continually pursue scalable and sustainable ways to optimise research, striving to create the conditions that allow for people to be both highly collaborative and deeply creative, making responsible and pioneering research progress at pace. The PGM leads the process of setting team objectives and defining relevant metrics, gives regular team status updates, and manages or escalates blocking issues. The PGM plans and delivers projects using knowledge of multiple project methodologies to deliver bespoke approaches for the team(s). The PGM identifies the need to improve ways of working, tools or processes and is responsible for the end-to-end lifecycle of project deliverables and dependencies.
The PGM supports the team by proactively resolving research requirements such as technical dependencies on other teams, or requirements for compute power. The PGM ensures that relevant technical documentation exists and is saved centrally, such as papers and reports.
The PGM provides expertise and guidance on research processes and initiatives, such as academic publications, external collaborations, and industry conferences. The PGM actively shares critical information with key decision makers and stakeholders, and presents research to other teams and externally where required.
You should have a proven ability to support individuals and teams to perform. You value different perspectives and help find common ground for the team. The ideal PGM will have the ability to create a collaborative team environment enabling high performance of the individuals and of the team. Candidates should have experience working within research environments and building relationships with peers across functions (e.g. policy, research, engineering, etc). Although knowledge of machine learning is not necessary, having a working understanding of the field, DeepMind’s expertise, and applications at Google would be helpful. In regards to machine learning, the necessary knowledge and skills for the role can be picked up on the job.
The PGM should have an instinctive ability for leading and collaborating with high achievers. The ideal PGM will understand the dynamics of teams and organizations, and have excellent communication and influencing skills and can use these when interacting with key stakeholders. The PGM can act with confidence in a fast paced, constantly changing, high performance culture.
The ideal candidate has a strong track record of experience working as a Program Manager or Technical Program Manager, with a deep familiarity of the fundamentals of project management (for example project definition, managing risk, managing dependencies and timelines, etc). The PGM can bring simplicity to complex processes and ideas, and takes initiative to solve problems with solutions that are repeatable, scalable and sustainable. The PGM drives alignment, coordination, and transparency within a distributed team across multiple time zones.
The successful PGM seizes opportunities to acquire new knowledge, has an aptitude to learn, and is passionate about solving artificial general intelligence, and using intelligence to the benefit of society. Any knowledge and familiarity with technical concepts such as information theory, mathematics, technical architectures, statistics, computer science, machine learning or reinforcement learning is an advantage but not a requirement.
