The DeepMind Ethics and Society (DMES) team has three main objectives: to conduct pioneering research into the social and ethical impact of AI, to help technologists put ethics into practice, and to help society anticipate and direct the impact of AI, so that it works for the benefit of all.

As part of this undertaking, we’ve brought together a team of world-class researchers who focus on six thematic areas in connection with AI:

  • Privacy, transparency and fairness
  • AI Morality and values
  • Governance and accountability
  • Efforts to managing AI risk
  • Using AI to address the world’s complex challenges
  • Economic impact, equality and inclusion

We are now looking for a Research Intern, who will be a core team member, offering critical support to our Research Scientists, while also conducting original research and analysis. This role is a unique opportunity to gain experience working in a new kind of organisation where we seek to challenge our own assumptions through groundbreaking research and collaboration with a range of experts from economics, philosophy, political science, and more.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate academic rigor, flexibility, and a willingness to work across disciplinary boundaries. We are looking for a team player with a track record working on collaborative projects and experience providing research support. A strong background in emerging technology policy and/or research methods is very welcome.


  • Prepare research papers and issue-specific briefings to an excellent written standard for internal and external stakeholders
  • Research, report, and monitor quantitative and qualitative research on emerging technology policy, with a focus on the real-world impact of AI
  • Prepare in-depth reports with original analysis and insight on trends and new developments across a wide range of disciplines
  • Identify areas that require further exploration within existing research; develop recommendations and proposals for new academic projects
  • Work with your manager towards contributing to published research

About you

  • Enrolled in either a Masters or PhD programme in a relevant academic field
  • Ability to work independently and produce high-level academic research (with appropriate supervision)
  • Excellent grasp of technology policy and its implications for society
  • Ability to quickly assimilate complex issues and work across science areas
  • Excellent analytical, critical and organizational skills
  • Excellent communicator, in person and in writing
  • Extraordinary work ethic and drive to achieve
  • Powerful intellectual curiosity that keeps the candidate ahead on substantive topics and challenges in the principal areas of focus
  • Team player with a sense of humor and the ability to exercise good judgement in a rapidly changing environment

Desired skills

  • Deep knowledge of and interest in sectors vital to artificial intelligence policy
  • Experience researching within an academic institution, think tank, or similar
  • Experience working with applied technologies (ie machine learning, deep learning, etc) in ethically important societal industries
  • Experience researching the ethical implications of emerging technologies
