DeepMind was founded by Dr Demis Hassabis, Mustafa Suleyman, and Dr Shane Legg in London in 2010 and is backed by some of the most successful technology entrepreneurs in the world. Having been acquired by Google in 2014, DeepMind operates as an independent team in the Alphabet group. It continues to be based in its hometown of London, alongside some of the country's leading academic, cultural and scientific organisations in the King's Cross ‘Knowledge Quarter’.

DeepMind is the world leader in the highly-competitive field of artificial intelligence (AI) research and its application for positive impact – a highly unusual leadership position for a company based outside the US.

The mission: to push the boundaries of AI, developing programs that can learn to solve any complex problem without needing to be taught how.

DeepMind works principally along two work streams. The research team, led by Demis and Shane, continues its work in solving intelligence and comprises arguably the greatest collection of AI research scientists in the world.

The DeepMind Applied team, led by Mustafa, is working with experts in different fields to make meaningful real-world breakthroughs with the leading-edge technology the business has developed. Its systems and applications are already having a major impact in areas such as energy use reduction (most notably its work with Google to use machine learning to reduce the energy needed for data centre cooling by a phenomenal 40%), and health.

DeepMind is also an active participant in the important and complex debates about how best to ensure that the use of AI benefits the many and not the few. To that end, the team also includes an ethics group that works in partnership with academics, non-profits and others to explore these issues. The team played an important role in the creation of the Partnership on AI, which will bring together leading research labs with non-profits, civil society groups and academics to develop best practices in areas such as algorithmic transparency and safety.

The progress made thus far is in part down to DeepMind’s approach, which combines the long-term thinking and interdisciplinary collaboration of academia, the energy and focus of a technology start-up, and the social purpose of a team fervent about impact.

THE ROLE

DeepMind is looking for an experienced Director of Internal Communications to help shape the organisational narrative as the business continues to grow and evolve. This presents a fascinating opportunity to partner in, and contribute to, the broader organisational design and structure of a growing business.  

The culture of DeepMind has been critical to its success to date, supported by a high-performing internal communications team of two (shortly growing to three). The Director of Internal Communications will help scale and develop this team. They will also have particular personal responsibility for partnering with the Founders and other executives across the business to help communicate their vision and strategy, and to act as a trusted executive advisor on a wide range of internal matters.  In doing so, S/He will help to enable all employees to be fully engaged so that they understand the role they play and the value of their contribution.

S/He will build the internal communications capability for the leadership, working closely with the Founders to help connect communications, strategy, and the workforce. S/He will help draw together and communicate a central narrative, working closely with the broader communications and marketing team, creating a ‘heartbeat’ of internal communications for the company, that brings everyone together around a common goal and mission.  

Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience of developing and delivering an internal communications strategy to support a business in growth mode.
  • A track record in creating programmes and creative campaigns to consistently and effectively communicate key messages that support the organisation’s business objectives, values, mission and branding initiatives internally
  • Expertise in developing the right guidelines and best practices for internal communications across the business
  • Extensive experience of working directly and credibly with senior leaders – CEO/Founders and other C-Suite executives, able to give wise counsel
  • An ability to take an innovative view of internal communications challenges, applying a "tech" mindset to the application of internal communications
  • Strong team leadership expertise – someone who is people focused, enjoys leading, and has a clear coaching style, with a strong track record of developing high-performing and high-potential teams
  • A ‘sleeves rolled up’ approach, coupled with an ability to think strategically
  • A skillful team player with strong relationship building and influencing skills, with the ability to network effectively up, down and across the organisation and enable communications and engagement at all levels
  • Experienced in finding new ways to leverage technologies to drive business communications and engagement
  • Expertise as a regular source of strategic and value-adding counsel for internal clients across the business
  • Experience in assisting in the creation and use of common systems for key business activities to ensure consistency and quality
  • Is able to engage and inspire teams with energy and enthusiasm for effective and creative internal communications – including across digital, traditional and face-to-face channels

 

Person Specification

  • An easy-going, hard-working, analytic thinker, team leader, proactive, adaptable to change with strong cognitive skills, including problem-solving, analysis, decision making, relationship management and leadership
  • A passion for internal communications with a creative interpretation of how to best bring the discipline’s related tools to life for DeepMind
  • Strong intellectual rigour and an appetite for professional development
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and a passion for excellence
  • Comfortable with concepts and complexity; able to think independently and make sound, reasoned judgements and solve problems
