Job Title: Program Manager - DeepMind for Google, Applied Research

Team Description

The DeepMind for Google (DMG) team partners with Google product teams to deploy machine learning algorithms to improve Google products and services. We work with Google teams such as Data Centre Operations, Google Play, and the Google Assistant. The DeepMind for Google team is very collaborative and diverse, and consists of Research Engineers, Research Scientists, Program Managers and Product Managers.

Within DMG, the Applied Research team plays a critical role in using DeepMind’s fundamental machine learning research to address Google product challenges. The team conducts focused research on areas relevant to DMG and partners with product teams to test and implement potential applications. Our established team of researchers are active within the global research community through publications and collaborations with many of the world’s top research groups, and the team’s approach encourages collaboration both with DeepMind Research and other research groups at Google.

About You

The ideal candidate has a strong track record of experience working as a Program Manager or Technical Program Manager, with a deep familiarity of the fundamentals of project management (for example project definition, managing risk, managing dependencies and timelines, etc) and must have experience working with research teams. 

Candidates should have experience building relationships with peers across functions (e.g. policy, research, product, test, engineering, etc). Further, experience working within research environments, projects, or teams, would be highly beneficial.

Although knowledge of machine learning is not necessary, having a working understanding of the field, DeepMind’s expertise and applications at Google would be helpful. In regard to machine learning, the necessary knowledge and skills for the role can be picked up.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced, independent, and well organized Program Manager to partner with DMG’s applied research team.

This role is critical to DMG, and enhances our team’s ability to apply cutting edge ML technology to some of the biggest product challenges at Google. As a Program Manager for the team, you will help bridge DeepMind’s research and applied efforts. Through your collaborative approach, leadership skills, knowledge of research environments, and organization you will help DMG maximize impact. You’ll align a globally distributed team as well as partners in other organizations, and serve as a critical POC and trusted partner within DMG and the greater DeepMind team.

As a PgM, you will implement the right amount of structure and process to enhance team productivity without incurring undue overhead. You're familiar with research environments and maybe have some academic or industry research experience. You are equally comfortable collaborating with cross-functional groups including engineering, product, and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and improve processes and documentation to drive alignment, coordination, and transparency within a distributed team across multiple time zones.
  • Drive coordination and alignment between the team and DeepMind Research teams’ planning and processes.
  • Maximise productive collaboration and knowledge transfer by identifying and creating appropriate forums, touchpoints, and processes between the two teams.
  • Participate in setting team objectives and defining relevant metrics; set, track and deliver on team goals; give regular team status updates; manage or escalate blocking issues.
  • Enhance visibility by communicating schedules, priorities, and status updates to the team, leadership and stakeholders.
  • Provide expertise and guidance on research processes and initiatives, such as academic publications, external collaborations, and industry conferences.
