The team behind Streams - our secure mobile app for clinicians - is joining Google.

In June 2017, we were delighted to announce a five-year partnership with Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust to bring our Streams technology to doctors and nurses at the trust.

Over the next five years, the Streams app will support nurses and doctors by providing them with alerts to a potential deterioration in a patient's vital signs that could indicate a serious problem. In the near future, Streams will also allow busy care teams to view their patients’ medical results on the move and securely input and review patient observations, like their blood pressure.

In addition to this, we’re also working with the trust to implement an infrastructure which will make it easier for the trust to easily and securely integrate other apps that could improve patient care, whether developed by third parties or innovators within the trust. This is known as an FHIR API, a state-of-the-art open and interoperable digital infrastructure that we’re providing in collaboration with Taunton’s long-term partner in the digital exemplar programme, IMS Maxims.

Streams has already had a significant impact for doctors and nurses at our other partner sites, and has been credited with helping deliver faster care to patients who become critically ill. One patient to benefit at the Royal Free was Afia Ahmed, who received quick treatment after clinicians were alerted to her deterioration when she became seriously ill after giving birth.

We are not currently processing patient data for Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. The trust is continuing to conduct a range of activities to ensure patients are aware of the project and their voices are heard. This has included events at the hospital, where members of the public have been able to see demonstrations of Streams and ask questions from the team. The trust is continuing this activity to ensure that patients are aware of how their data is used to provide them with medical care. For more information, please head to the Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust website, which will continue to be updated.
