FAQs

  • What is DeepMind Ethics & Society?

DeepMind Ethics & Society is a research unit within DeepMind that aims to explore and better understand the real-world impacts of AI.  It aims to help technologists put ethics into practice and help society anticipate and control the effects of AI.

  • Why did DeepMind launch its Ethics & Society research unit?

DeepMind’s mission is to solve intelligence and use it to make the world a better place. As scientists developing AI technologies we have a responsibility to conduct and support open research and investigation into the wider implications of our work. We start from the premise that all AI applications should remain under meaningful human control, and be used for socially beneficial purposes. Understanding what this means in practice requires rigorous scientific inquiry into the most sensitive challenges we face.

  • What will DeepMind Ethics & Society do?

We will publish original research of our own and in collaboration with others, guided by our key research themes and according to our Principles. Our research will be available online, and contribute to the evidence-base for meaningful debate about the real-world impacts of AI. In addition, we intend to host events and broader discussions in conjunction with our partners, in order to include a wide and diverse range of voices in this important societal discussion.

  • What work does DeepMind Ethics & Society fund?

DeepMind funds academic research through unrestricted grants. We also fund collaborative projects and events with our partners on a range of AI-related issues. As in our Principles, we will always be open about who we work with and what projects we fund, and will never seek to influence or predetermine the outcome of any research.

  • How were DeepMind Research Fellows selected?

Research Fellows are selected for their personal integrity and academic achievements, as well as their reputation for asking challenging questions. Typically they come from the research community and specialize in a variety of areas relating to AI and its intersection with society. They are united by an interest in the ethical and social impacts of AI and machine learning.
